Set (also spelled Seth, Setesh, Sutekh, Setekh or Suty) was a god of the desert, storms, and foreigners in ancient Egyptian religion. In later myths he was also the god of darkness, and chaos. In Ancient Greek, the god's name is given as Σήθ (Seth). In Egyptian mythology, Set is portrayed as the usurper that killed and mutilated his own brother Osiris. Osiris' wife Isis reassembled Osiris' corpse and embalmed him. Osiris' son Horus, seek revenge upon Set, and the myths describe their conflicts. The death of Osiris and the battle between Horus and Set is a popular theme in Egyptian mythology.

In the Hebrew Bible, the coat of many colors (Hebrew: כְּתֹנֶת פַּסִּים‎ kethoneth passim) is the name for the garment that Joseph owned. The translation and the actual nature of the garment is subject to dispute.
It is possible that the idea of the coat being "of many colors" may mean that it was in fact a patchwork coat of different materials which may have been of different colors or merely different shades of a single color.

Tamar (Hebrew: תָּמָר, Modern tamar Tiberian tāmār) is a person in 2 Samuel in the Hebrew Bible. She was the daughter of King David, and sister of Absalom. Her mother was Maacah, daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur. According to the narrative in 2 Samuel 13, she was raped by her half-brother Amnon.

According to 2 Samuel 13:18, Tamar had a "richly ornamented robe" (NIV). Adrien Bledstein connects this to Joseph's coat of many colors, and concludes that Tamar was a priestess, healer and "mistress of dreams".^[3]
