BRITISH RACIAL TOLERANCE AND WHITE HATE

BRITISH RACIAL TOLERANCE

AND

WHITE HATE (WHITE HEAT)

The tolerance paradox arises from a problem that a tolerant person might be antagonistic toward intolerance, hence intolerant of it. The tolerant individual would then be by definition intolerant of intolerance.

    Operation Trident might provide a clue.

    Operation Trident (Metropolitan Police)

    Operation Trident or Trident, is a Metropolitan Police Service unit targeting gun crime in London, with special attention being placed on shootings relating to the illegal sale of drugs, and crime in Afro-Caribbean communities.[1] The initiative was set up in March 1998 following a series of shootings in the London boroughs of Lambeth and Brent.

    Britannia

    ...After centuries of declining use, the Latin form was revived during the English Renaissance as a rhetorical evocation of a British national identity. Especially following the Acts of Union in 1707, which joined the Kingdoms of England and Scotland, the personification of the martial Britannia was used as an emblem of British imperial power and unity....

    ...British power, which depended on a liberal political system and the supremacy of the navy, lent these attributes to the image of Britannia. By the time of Queen Victoria, Britannia had been renewed. Still depicted as a young woman with brown or golden hair, she kept her Corinthian helmet and her white robes, but now she held Poseidon's three-pronged trident and often sat or stood before the ocean and tall-masted ships representing British naval power. She also usually held or stood beside a Greek hoplite shield, which sported the British Union Flag: also at her feet was often the British Lion, an animal found on the arms of England, Scotland and the Prince of Wales.

    King Neptune is shown symbolically passing his trident to Britannia in the 1847 fresco "Neptune Resigning to Britannia the Empire of the Sea" by William Dyce, a painting Victoria commissioned for her Osborne House on the Isle of Wight....

  2. Britannia Rules the Waves?

    Rule, Britannia!

    1

    When Britain first, at Heaven's command
    Arose from out the azure main;
    This was the charter of the land,
    And guardian angels sang this strain:

    "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
    "Britons never will be slaves."

    2

    The nations, not so blest as thee,
    Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall;
    While thou shalt flourish great and free,
    The dread and envy of them all.

    "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
    "Britons never will be slaves."

    3

    Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
    More dreadful, from each foreign stroke;
    As the loud blast that tears the skies,
    Serves but to root thy native oak.

    "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
    "Britons never will be slaves."

    4

    Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame:
    All their attempts to bend thee down,
    Will but arouse thy generous flame;
    But work their woe, and thy renown.

    "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
    "Britons never will be slaves."

    5

    To thee belongs the rural reign;
    Thy cities shall with commerce shine:
    All thine shall be the subject main,
    And every shore it circles thine.

    "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
    "Britons never will be slaves."

    6

    The Muses, still with freedom found,
    Shall to thy happy coast repair;
    Blest Isle! With matchless beauty crown'd,
    And manly hearts to guard the fair.

    "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
    "Britons never will be slaves."

    Berserker

    Berserkers (or berserks) were Norse warriors who are reported in the Old Norse literature to have fought in a nearly uncontrollable, trance-like fury, a characteristic which later gave rise to the English word berserk. Berserkers are attested to in numerous Old Norse sources. Most historians believe that berserkers worked themselves into a rage before battle, but some think that they might have consumed drugged foods.

  4. Harold Wilson

    ...At the Labour Party's 1963 Annual Conference, Wilson made both his first speech as Leader and possibly his best-remembered speech overall, on the implications of scientific and technological change, in which he argued that "the Britain that is going to be forged in the white heat of this revolution will be no place for restrictive practices or for outdated measures on either side of industry"....

    Kenya

    The first direct elections for Africans to the Legislative Council took place in 1957. Despite British hopes of handing power to "moderate" African rivals, it was the Kenya African National Union (KANU) of Jomo Kenyatta that formed a government shortly before Kenya became independent on 12 December 1963, on the same day forming the first Constitution of Kenya.

  5. Peter Griffiths

    ...He served as a councillor until 1963 when he resigned to fight the Smethwick parliamentary seat in the forthcoming general election against the sitting Labour Member of Parliament (MP) Patrick Gordon Walker. Labour were expected to win the 1964 election, and Gordon Walker was Foreign Secretary designate. Smethwick had been a focus of immigration from the Commonwealth during the years of economic and industrial growth following World War II[citation needed]. It was perhaps for these reasons that race and nationality featured prominently in what became an increasingly ill-tempered local election campaign in 1964.

    In criticism of both government and opposition immigration policy[citation needed], Griffiths ran an anti-immigration campaign, benefiting from the infamous slogan "If you want a nigger for a neighbour, vote Labour".[2][3] It is a common misconception that this was Griffith's campaign slogan. In fact, posters with the racist slogan were erected around the area, although it is unclear as to who was responsible for them. His defeat of Gordon Walker shocked the establishment; Harold Wilson stated in the House of Commons that Griffiths should "serve his term here as a parliamentary leper".[4] In his maiden speech in the Commons, however, Griffiths pointed out the problems faced by local industry and drew attention to the fact that 4,000 families were awaiting local authority accommodation....

    Rivers of Blood speech

    Enoch Powell's address to the General Meeting of the West Midlands Area Conservative Political Centre (commonly called "Rivers of Blood" speech) on 20 April 1968 was a speech criticising Commonwealth immigration, and anti-discrimination legislation that had been proposed in the United Kingdom. Enoch Powell (1912–1998) was the Conservative Member of Parliament for Wolverhampton South West. Though Powell referred to the speech as "the Birmingham speech", it is otherwise known as the "Rivers of Blood" speech, a title derived from its allusion to a line from Virgil's Aeneid.[1] Although the phrase "rivers of blood" does not appear in the speech, the name alludes to the line, "As I look ahead, I am filled with foreboding; like the Roman, I seem to see 'the River Tiber foaming with much blood.'"

    The white heat of Wilson

    A POINT OF VIEW
    By Brian Walden

    Brian Walden looks at the phases of fascination and disillusion with "new visions".

    When I was first taught history it was done in a most enjoyable way. Personalities dominated the subject.

    Great figures were discussed in the lessons and the schoolbooks were full of kings and queens, who were often violent and impulsive. I learnt quite a lot about bygone centuries, because historical tales were so entertaining.
