Subject: Response from Haringey Council
I refer to your recent communications on your own behalf and that of the Black National Party and British Racial Democratic Party that you state you represent.
· Letter regarding the Black History Month 2013
· Email headed - Racist incident – Marcus Garvey Library, Black History Month
· Haringey Library Review
Firstly, please accept my apologies on behalf of Haringey Council for the delay in replying to your letter dated 26 October 2013.
Thank you for your kind words and compliments on our efforts in organising the Black History Month. In your letter, you compliment Dawn Gobourne on the excellent work she had done in organising and running the Black History Month events at Marcus Garvey Library. The interest and popularity of the events was certainly reflected in the visitor figures for October and together with the Freedom Exhibition we exceeded over 3,000 visitors. Looking forward, I am sure the Council will strive to provide whatever resources we are able to make Black History Month in 2014 a success throughout all the libraries. In the meantime, I have ensured your compliments have been passed on to Dawn.
In regards to your other correspondence and comments, if you are a witness to or a victim of a racist incident in Haringey libraries or any council facility for that matter, please report that to a member of staff. It may also be appropriate to inform the police. If you wish to complain that you have been the victim racism from a Haringey Council employee, please provide details to our complaints team so that the incident can be investigated. You can email firstname.lastname@example.org.
You state that that there is white supremacist activity at Haringey libraries. This is something that the council could possibly investigate, and to help any investigation it would be useful to clarify what you mean by “white supremacist activity” and provide details.
All services and development activity, such as the Libraries Review, are conducted in accordance with the Councils Equalities Policy.
Details of the Council’s approach to equalities can be found on our http://www.haringey.gov.uk/
I do hope this e-mail clarifies a number of issues and thank you once again for the comments about Black History Month and for raising the other issues.
